Which antivirus/security software uses less resources? Kaspersky or Webroot?

Question by Jesse J: Which antivirus/security software uses less resources? Kaspersky or Webroot?
I am currently using Webroot antivirus plus antispyware and my subscription is about to run out. I am happy with Webroot, but I want to look at the other options too. My top replacement candidate is Kaspersky, with my following favorites being Trend Micro, and Norton/Mcafee being near the bottom. Is Kaspersky worth the change from Webroot? I don’t want something bogging my system down and hogging all the resources. I thought Webroot did a good job but if Kaspsersky’s resource management is similar and has better detection/removal then I will go with that. I work in tech support and I’ve noticed Kaspersky has a few issues with Windows Sidebar, which isn’t a big deal, but it makes me shy away from Kaspersky. Any thoughts or statistics? Possible links to comparisons of speed or protection? What does consumer reports say? I am looking at Kasp 2010 Internet security and just antivirus

I don’t know anything about Webroot, but Kaspersky completely messed up my computer! Couldn’t even get the OS to boot. Checked out forums on my dad’s pc, and they all blamed Kaspersky. I went back to Norton (reluctantly) and to be honest, it’s been great.

Sygate firewall – AVG compatibility issue: AVG detects a rootkit in Sygate program?

Question by What’d I Say: Sygate firewall – AVG compatibility issue: AVG detects a rootkit in Sygate program?
I’m trying to run AVG free antivirus (latest version) with Sygate firewall V5.6.2808. I obtained my copy of Sygate from brothersoft.com. When AVG scans for rootkits, it says two drivers (teefer.sys and wpsdrvnt.sys) connected to Sygate have rootkit infections (and as hidden objects). If I allow AVG to delete these files Sygate will of course not run. Sygate runs without interference from AVG, but the scan indicates a rootkit infection.

For comparison, I uninstalled Sygate and installed ZoneAlarm free firewall (latest V9.2.76.0). AVG found no rootkit infections, but if you look in the program folders for ZoneAlarm you see there are no .sys files. My concern is that AVG is detecting the .sys Windows System Files for Sygate as a type of rootkit only as a false positive IF indeed the two .sys files should be in the Sygate program folder.

I see at the AVG website: “For detection of active rootkits the AVG program includes the Anti-Rootkit component. This component is able to detect rootkits according to a predefined set of rules. Please note, that all rootkits are detected (not just the infected). In case the AVG program finds some rootkits it does not necessarily mean, that the rootkit is infected. Sometimes, rootkits are used as drivers or they are a part of correct applications.”

This website: http://www.file.net/process/teefer.sys.html says the teefer.sys file belongs to the Sygate Personal Firewall, and should be located in the folder C:\Windows\System32\drivers…But they also say, “Some malware camouflage themselves as Teefer.sys, particularly if they are located in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folder. Thus check the Teefer.sys process on your pc whether it is pest.”

For the other driver, wpsdrvnt.sys, same website says, “Driver file for Sygate personal firewall, not dangerous, but known to cause system instability.”

–If these files should be there, doesn’t it look like AVG detects the rootkit but it’s not a real infection?

You are correct. Its a false positive.

This will give you a good idea of exactly what I’m talking about. After installing ESET Mobile Antivirus, my key guard doesn’t work. Only after I uninstall it can I get the keyguard to work. That’s not cool! *Edit* I am the first person to bring this issue to ESET’s attention. From what they say, their development staff is working on recreating the issue and hopefully there will be a solution soon!

Q&A: Avira free av vs. Bitdefender anti-virus?

Question by Wood Knight: Avira free av vs. Bitdefender anti-virus?
Which is better between Avira personal and Bitdefender anti-virus. I’ve heard that two of them are good at cleaning bunches of viruses. However I will choose one of them to install on my pc. So, which one should I install? I’ve medium resource for the antivirus (not very much resources).
Bitdefender price is ok for me. I would purchase if it is better than Avira personal(free).

PS. Please don’t recommend me other programs, and give me only comparison between this two anti-virus function only.(not firewall or anti-spam).
Thanks

Answer by vis s
The main thing about the big purchasing software is that it leaves some of its files if you uninstall after the subscription. You’ll get into problems if you try to delete those files. They are not viruses. they are good files but used by company to track your system and subscription period. At present Bit defender is the number 1 but u’ll get the above problems after using it. It may stop you from installing another antivirus even after you have removed the old one.

So BETTER choose AVIRA FREE EDITION. It doesn’t create those problems and ease of use.

What do you think? Answer below!

Just a small clip I uploaded to share with a few forums of my MSI Wind booting into Windows 7 RC. I know there are plenty of videos out there showing this already, but I think every video counts as I’m sure there are quite a few people who want to run Windows 7 RC, but have their reservations. If you discount the initial power up and boot loader delays, you’ll see that the login screen appears in about 40 seconds. And you can see that I don’t enable Turbo mode anytime during the video, so it’s all stock speed while being plugged into the charger. It’s a clean install, running Symantec Antivirus 10.2 for VIsta (yes it works perfectly, so install this and don’t bother with SEP), and Windows Live. All updates have been installed. You don’t need an external drive to install, just mount the ISO in Daemon tools and run the installer. Installation is hassle free, and very pleasant on the eyes. I can’t give a comparison against Vista, because I refuse to use it, however I can honestly say this computer likes Windows 7, and I’m sure M$ will tweak it even more from the feedback that is provided. As a side note, this goes to prove just what a bunch of lazy bastards M$ ‘s developers really are, and that they can pick up their feet if they want to.

Is Webroot Window Washer a part of Webroot Internet Security Essentials?

Question by Ѕємι~Мαđ ŠçїєŋŧιѕТ: Is Webroot Window Washer a part of Webroot Internet Security Essentials?
I am looking at purchasing Webroot’s AntiVirus software for my home computer. I also want to use Window Washer as well. When running their on-line comparison expressing my interest for both products (http://www.webroot.com/En_US/land-helpmechoose.html ), it refers me to their Essentials package. Based on the description of Essentials, AntiVirus is definitely a part of it, but it’s not clear to me if Window Washer is a part of that programme. What I want to know is if Washer is indeed a part of Essentials, or if I would need to buy AntiVirus and Washer separately? A reference for verification (such as a website) would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Is Download.com safe?

Question by Ratul: Is Download.com safe?
I downloaded softwares from Download.com and my download manager, DAP, said that it has not been checked weather its safe! It said, “SpeedBit Multi antivirus (MAV) Analysis
No Single antivirus application provides 100% protection!
SpeedBit MAV Analysis helps you make an informed decision about your files, and lets you see what multiple antivirus applications have to say.

Using multiple Antivirus applications on the same file reveals:
A single antivirus application detects at best only 50% of the files that were identified by running several antivirus applications
Some antivirus products tested missed 90% of the bad files detected by a pool of antivirus programs

Speedbit MAV Analysis Gives You All the Information
SpeedBit MAV Analysis provides you with the test results, from several antivirus applications, of the files you have downloaded. This comparison gives you valuable insight into the nature of your files, and helps you decide if a file is safe.

See whether your current antivirus program identified a safe file as a threat. Find out which antivirus applications miss a threat that the other programs are able to find. Don’t rely on one antivirus program; see what they all say.

How It Works
SpeedBit MAV Analysis constantly tests an extensive database of downloaded files, with several of the leading antivirus applications. When you download a file, the most recent test results are displayed, and you are issued a specific security report on your file.

The security analysis summary informs you of the category of your file, and provides you with a recommendation of how to proceed. You will receive one of the following reports:

Trusted This file has been tested by leading antivirus programs and no threat has been detected. You can open this file.
Potentially Unwanted This file has been tested by leading antivirus programs and it is possibly a malicious file and a threat. Open this file only if you’re certain that it is safe, or if it comes from a trusted source.

Which one should I stick with?

Question by Eh Wha?: Which one should I stick with?
I have had Avira Antivirus (along with SpyBlaster, Spyguard, and Superantispyware Free) running on my computer for a few months until I was able to buy a program.

I recently purchased (but haven’t opened yet) Kaspersky Antivirus. I also found out in the same day we are getting Comcast internet which can come with McAfee Security Suite. I want to go with whichever has higher detection rates of viruses, spyware, malware, etc. (keyloggers are what I am especially concerned with). I haven’t had much researching these issues on the internet. Kind of a weird comparison since one is only antivirus…but any advice on what to go with? I think if I went with McAfee, I would still buy an anti-spyware program to go along with it, like Counterspy.

And I am not trying to be mean, but please don’t bother suggesting AVG or Avast or Ad-Aware 2007 or the like. I just finally got rid of Ad-Aware because it is so awful to use anymore.
Custom Computer- I have tried, or rather attempted, several online scans but unfortunately they never want to work. I don’t if it has to do with the fact that I am still on dial-up or what. I just tried to run a McAfee one on the Comcast page and it keeps telling me I can only use it with IE 5.0 or higher. I have 7.0!
patrick b- whether you are being smart or not, I still doubt it’s the best.

Due to my good experiences with Avira (it has picked up a few malicious programs from drive by downloads and everytime I sign into the atrocious PeoplePC, it detects the trojan trying to be executed; it also picked up several programs on my sister’s computer that Norton missed), a paid Avira Antivirus is also in consideration. The only reason I am moving away from Avira free is because I want something that does more.

I forgot to mention that I am not just looking at detection rates, but at how the programs are with system usage. I don’t want a system hog.

Q&A: Is this sentences correct?(grammar and vocabulary)?

Question by John: Is this sentences correct?(grammar and vocabulary)?
There are many good free antiviruses that work better than some other companies paid antivirus. For example if you look at av-comparative.com (very famous and trustworthy antivirus testing lab) test results, you see avast free antivirus got “Advanced+” certificate while some paid antivirus such as AVG, McAfee or panda got “Advanced” certificate. That means it is better to use avast free antivirus than AVG, McAfee or panda paid version antivirus.
If you are an ordinary Internet user and use internet for chatting, surfing popular sites not for online shopping or banking activities and also you have not very important data in your computer, free antivirus will be good for you but if it is not so you should buy an internet security software that has extra functions for be more secure online.
Here are links to most popular free antivirus sites. We strongly recommend you use avast free antivirus because it is the best free antivirus at present time. If you want a comparison between some free antivirus look at the table that compares free version of these top three antivirus provider companies: avast, AVG and Avira.

Q&A: Avira vs. Kaspersky comparison, premium editions?

Question by Nick: Avira vs. Kaspersky comparison, premium editions?
Which antivirus program is better if you own the full premium edition, and why? Avira Antivirus ( http://www.avira.com/en/pages/index.php ) or Kaspersky Lab ( http://usa.kaspersky.com/) ? I currently have the free version of Avira, I’m quite satisfied with it except for some pop-up notifiers of “You should upgrade!” Those are annoying but the security is fine, and will go away if I upgrade. If Kaspersky is better overall, though, I’ll give that a look… Any thoughts? And why?
