I have been hacked in the past, I rely on anti virus/spy ware to block attempted hacking, am I protected?

Question by Fitandlovingit754: I have been hacked in the past, I rely on anti virus/spy ware to block attempted hacking, am I protected?
I was hacked in two ways, one through a key stroke logger which divulged my passwords allowing access, are there other ways I should be watching.

You need to get a firewall up too. Anti-virus and spyware protection is good, but without a firewall people can hack into your PC even if they don’t upload any viruses or spyware onto it.

Windows has a built in firewall, but it’s not that great. Zonealarm is a popular firewall, so you could look into getting that.

    Far from protected
sites can run Active X scripts on your PC
and actually install viruses and spyware
without your protection even seeing the install

Never go to a new unknown site with IE
    use firefox

For safest browsing set up a windows account
that has no permissions to install anything just run installed
    apps and programs
when you browse the security of the limited account will prevent installation of most hazards

    use firefox instead of IE
There are some useful plugins for firefox, such as Firekeeper, AdBlock and NoScript
Use a tempfiles cleaner like CCleaner each time you end browsing
Do not open email attachments from the mail which you are not expecting / bulk mail
    Change your password frequently
keep and extra email address listed in your accounts as secondary email, so that you can inform the service provider whenever there is a breach
It is good to have a separate firewall software other than the windows built in

It is wise of you to use anti virus software to block hackers. If you have got these viruses from your downloads or emails, be careful of sites that are not encrypted. Do not open attachments from people you don’t know. For extra protection, you can use 2 anti virus programs. I recommend AVG as it is free and easy to use.

Firewall must be on full strength
and remember to use a GOOD anti-virus software such as Norton or McAffee, these are among the leading in the world.
If you are unhappy about the filewall, although the free one is sufficient enough – when used with the correct settings, then you can purchase some.
make sure you don’t just buy one service but the whole thing to ensure you are fully protected

    Norton 360 – http://www.symantec.com/norton360/
    McAffee Full Protection – http://www.mcafee.com/

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I have just upgraded to AVG free 8.0 and all seems good so far. Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps
