Generally, “Internet Security” means other things, like providing a firewall, etc., beyond just the anti-virus stuff.

Download Q&A: What’s the difference between an anti-virus and an anti-spyware program?

Question by Sam: What’s the difference between an anti-virus and an anti-spyware program?
So at the moment, I only have a program which says it’s anti spyware (Webroot Spy Sweeper) and was wondering if it also would protect my computer against viruses (and then I wondered what the difference between an Anti-Virus and an Anti-Spyware is). So if SpySweeper doesn’t protect against viruses should I get an anti-virus program? And would it mess up my computer with two security programs, because I’ve heard that if you have two Anti-Viruses on the same computer it will mess up things.

Thanks for any answers.

An antivirus program will protect you from getting any viruses on your computer, and antispyware will concentrate on the spyware programs but will also detect viruses once you already have gotten them, antivirus will reflect and antispyware will remove once you already have them. you cannot have 2 antivirus programs but you can have an anitvirus and an antispyware. for example you can have norton and superantispyware but not norton and mcaffee.

Download: What is the difference between downloadable Microsoft Office software and the physical discs?

Question by Anonymous: What is the difference between downloadable Microsoft Office software and the physical discs?
I downloaded Microsoft Home and Student 2010 for my laptop and the software was downloadable online and came with the unlock key, same for the Norton AntiVirus software. Both were preloaded on my laptop so I just needed the keys to unlock each. But I wanted to know if there’s any kind of difference at all between the downloadable software and the physical discs you would buy online or in the store. And do they make a difference when you download them onto your computer?

Thanks!

Question by Casey: What is the difference between anti-virus software and anti spyware?
What is the difference bewtween antivirus like symantec and Mcafee vs. Anti-adware spyware made by lavasoft?

A virus is a small computer program which replicates itself onto other computers, hence why it is called a virus, it acts in a similar way to normal viruses. It can allow malicious people to take control of your pc and use it in a wide range of ways.

Spyware on the other hand, is software which is put onto your pc and tracks what you do, or shows adverts, installs annoying programs etc.

Anti virus software runs and checks files for a virus against a database of virus ‘foot prints’. Anti spyware searches for installed programs, then removes them for you.

Cookies are just small .txt (text) files that by themselves cannot hurt your computer. Cookies are “set” by almost EVERY web-site that you visit, on every visit. You can delete all your cookies today and by tomorrow you will have dozens again just be visiting web-sites.

Cookies do NOT slow down a computer, at least the first million or so that you might have on your computer!

They are not a virus or spyware, but SOME people consider “tracking” cookies to be an invasion of privacy.

These tracking cookies are “3rd party cookies” from advertising servers. They can track your movements around the web in order to deliver to you customized, targeted advertising.

It all depends on ones personal level of paranoia, whether one considers tracking cookies some kind of threat. Some anti-spyware programs do not even report tracking cookies as even a minor threat.

If these tracking cookies DO bother you AND you are using Internet Explorer for a browser, a simple change of a setting can let you permanently block all 3rd party (tracking) cookies. (Much easier then constantly removing them!) Go to tools > internet options > privacy > advanced > check-mark “override automatic cookie handling” > third party cookies > tick “block” > ok > ok.

Children are about the only people that are always nervous about cookies. Because cookies are an easy way for Mommy and Daddy to find out exactly what their darling ‘lil ones have been looking at on the web.

Personally, If I happen to remember it, I will delete my cookies every 6 months or so :-)

Cookies are much ado about nothin’.

In terms of computers What is difference between Spy-ware, malware, adware, cookies, virus worm and trojans?

Question by Farrakh: In terms of computers What is difference between Spy-ware, malware, adware, cookies, virus worm and trojans?

Spyware, adware, malware, worms and trojans are bits of malicious code that get into your computer. Some are harmless, many are not. They can cause your computer to do some strange things.

Cookies are also bit of code that let websites you visit know what your shopping and surfing preferences are. Cookies are generally harmless.

Viruses can really do the most damage, by infecting your computer to the point of shutting it down.
