As there are so many to choose from, it would be best for you to type in ‘free anti-virus software’ in to your google search bar, then pick which one takes your fancy. Just be sure you run one at a time.
When I was running Windows, I started with AVG, then went to Avira. I also ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, but now that I run Ubuntu, I have no need for any of that software.

AVG – they also have a great anti virus program
http://free.grisoft.com/
Then I would try the the anti spyware. The link is on the same page above.
Unlike anti virus, you want to run multiple anti spyware.
Another anti spyware is Ad Aware.

Then there is Spybot:

Either AVG or Avast.

As far as making your computer faster, there are a number of things you can do, but the most recommended is to upgrade your RAM.
Go to Crucial.com and run their system scanner. It will tell you what RAM type your system uses and how much it can handle. RAM is so cheap now, aside form being free it is the most inexpensive upgrade to increase performance.
http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/index.aspx
Aside from just upgrading your RAM you can simply eliminate the amount of things starting up on your computer during boot-up. Too many background tasks running can hog up all your RAM and slow it down considerably.
Go to start/run and type msconfig and hit enter.
Click the Startup tab and uncheck anything you don’t need starting up when your compter boots up.
When done reboot. There will be a popup that will come up saying some things have been changed to your startup. Just tick the little box to never show this again, and hit OK.
Also, run a good cleaner(I recommend Ccleaner)
http://www.ccleaner.com/
…and also defrag.
Open My Computer, right click on your hard drive(most likely Local Disk C:) and select properties.
Then click on the Tools Tab, and hit Defragment Now, then the Defragment button.(this could take a while mattering on how large your hard drive is and how fragmented your drive is)
*seriously? who gave me a thumbs down?*
