I’ve noticed there are alot of free/open source programs that are just as good or better than ones you would pay for, but is there a good one when it comes to virus and spyware protection?

Why are you insistent on open-source?
Well anyhow, the only open-source AV that I’m aware of is ClamWin.
It is *on-demand* only, meaning that it will scan and remove, but you must update it and scan manually, and it gives no *real-time* protection.

If you would like to install a *real-time* antivirus, I use and recommend Avast v4.8 Home Edition:
